The Gift by WildWoodArtsCo The Gift by WildWoodArtsCo
Another piece I'll be submitting to the Enchanted Visions project. It's been through a couple of incarnations before I settled on this one. Partly because the first background I drew was just awful, then I made the mistake of trying out a new brand of watercolour paper that I didn't like at all. So this was the third attempt.
It scanned a little light (had to do it in two part - find the join if you can :) )

Original is about 13x12" on 140lb W&N watercolor paper, painted in watercolor with a little gouache and colored pencil.

This is beautiful! I love the faces in the trees. I didn't notice them right away until I looked closer. They're wonderfully subtle, they feel like they're really a part of the tree instead of painted on if that makes sense. I really like the little blue fairy and the glow of light between the pair :)

Such a sweet contrast between the earth-toned creature and the sky-blue fairy. The creature's eyes are so calm and curious. He reminds me a bit of the faun from Pan's Labyrinth.

What extraordinary work, it must have taken ages to paint all those trees and fur. I like the pop of color at the bottom with the mushrooms and the use of yellow for the sky make it seem like a fantasy world. I was wondering if the eye should have a shadow of a pupil, maybe this creature you have created doesn't have one, it was just a thought. The way you have the glowing light reflecting off the skin of the creature is perfect.

:D Yup, it's that small. Most of the details were painted with a 000 watercolor brush.

Thank you. There were a lot of influences on this piece. I'd been looking at work by Arthur Rackham, James Browne and Brian Froud for inspiration. I love the palette of blues and browns that Brian Froud often uses in his work so my choice of colors for this was a deliberate attempt to try them for myself.

Beautiful color scheme and interesting subject ^_^
Have you ever tried to scan larger artworks in many parts, overlapping instead of dividing in equal halves? It is better I think if you have Photoshop because PS has the option of automatic merging images based on close pixels and it does wonders - you don't have to merge scanned parts manually.

Thank you :)

I don't have Photoshop but I did overlap the scans quite a bit so that I had more to work with when I joined them up.

Great job! The detail in this is just wonderful, and I like the warm earthen tones used. The contrast against the browns and the blues/whites was also done very well.

A wonderful painting. I love the way you draw your characters. You don't try to make them look human. You celebrate the fact that they are different.

The contrast between the warm browns and cool blue/white was very well done.

I wonder what will happen when the little fairy touches the satyr's nose.
